Causes of DIGESTIVE ISSUES

The root causes of IBS and other digestive issues can be linked to:

  • damage to the intestinal lining

  • deficiency of enzymes or stomach acid required for proper digestion

  • deficiency of key nutrients for proper function

  • imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut

  • overgrowth of bacteria, fungus, or parasites leading to symptoms

The following can alter the microbiome (balance of good and bad bacteria) in the gut or cause damage to the gut lining and lead to digestive symptoms:

Common DIGESTIVE conditions

Digestive issues can result from the following:

LEAKY GUT: There is an increased permeability of the lining of the intestines, letting large, partially digested food particles get through that should not and leads to symptoms.

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX (GERD): Reflux of acid from the stomach into the lower end of the esophagus (also known as acid reflux or heartburn).

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS): IBS is an intestinal disorder characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea.

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD): IBD is chronic inflammation of all or parts of the digestive tract and includes Chrohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH (SIBO): This is a condition where bacteria that should live in the large intestine grows in the small intestine.

CELIAC DISEASE: This disorder is an autoimmune reaction to gluten that can damage the lining of the small intestine and causes many digestive symptoms.

NON-CELIAC GLUTEN SENSITIVITY (NCGS): A non-immune or autoimmune reaction to gluten that may benefit from eating gluten-free.

FOOD ALLERGIES: This is an immune system reaction (often immediate) to a particular food.

FOOD INTOLERANCES: Intolerances are a difficulty digesting particular foods that result in symptoms that can occur over time.

ORGAN SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION: Dysfunction of an organ such as liver cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis, or renal failure can result in digestive issues.

Solutions from Composed Nutrition

We work together to identify the root causes of the symptoms you are feeling. You will first complete a comprehensive health assessment prior to our first appointment. We then begin the first session by reviewing what your assessment reveals about your health and get started on attainable changes to start seeing relief from your irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other digestive issues right away.

We focus on setting a balanced nutrition foundation and develop an individualized plan focused on healing the gut that may include herbal and nutrient supplements and tailoring your exercise routine to your energy levels to ease your digestive issues. We will discuss if an elimination protocol like low FODMAP, gluten-free, or dairy-free would benefit your symptoms. My approach to these restrictive protocols is to emphasize this is an experiment for healing and how to flip the mindset away from restriction.

I use the 4R approach to help heal the gut and alleviate symptoms:

  • Remove: bad bacteria from the gut + foods exacerbating symptoms

  • Replace: low digestive enzymes / stomach acid

  • Repopulate: the gut with healthy bacteria

  • Repair: damage to the gut lining

During our time together I will equip you with the tools to take control of your health. Together we will customize a plan that works best for you with your goals in mind.

We can discuss ways to reset your mind to ease your digestive issues:

  • Incorporating a morning and night routine

  • Learning how to set healthy boundaries to protect your energy

  • Identifying tips for more restful sleep

  • Discovering stress management techniques

  • Reframing negative self-talk + tuning into your body

  • Exploring spiritual practices like mindfulness + meditation

Functional lab testing is useful in uncovering potential imbalances related to your digestive issues from the convenience and privacy of your own home. We will discuss the results, what they mean, and how to correct imbalances that may be at the root of your digestive issues.

Common tests I use to help identify the root causes of digestive issues:

  • SIBO BREATH TEST: to detect the presence of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine

  • COMPREHENSIVE STOOL ANALYSIS: assessment of the microbiome with attention to bacteria, parasites and viral pathogens disrupting microbial balance in the gut and contributing to chronic GI symptoms

  • FOOD SENSITIVITIES: to identify foods that may be exacerbating your symptoms

We will consider all pieces of the Composed Nutrition wheel to achieve optimal health and get you feeling like yourself again.
